Tuesday nights we have our life group over at our house and we all bring a dish that is themed. This week was Mexican. I decided to try Mexican rice - something I've never made before. It actually turned out pretty okay, minus the needing of salt. I have such a hard time with salt. I never put salt in anything or I put too much. Most of the time I do the first because you can always add salt vs taking salt away. I'm adding the recipe in case you would like to take a try! Dropping a few pictures in also, just because I like pictures :) Make sure to follow me on Facebook to check out extra tips :) ------>HERE

Our homemade pizza is seriously so much better than takeout - and it is fun for the kids as well! While on the meal planning train I want to make sure everyone is involved. One night a week my parents have a night, the kids get to choose a night, John will pick a favorite, and then Sundays I do not cook at all. That is either a leftover or just a free for all night. I can handle three nights to myself to pick a meal.

Tonight the kids planned pizza! They were PUMPED! Both chose a topping and worked on their "own" pizza for the family. It was certainly easy and more definitely fun! Below is what we used to make our own pizza!

Ingredients:
- Pillsbury Pizza dough {we did two pizzas, so two of these}
- Pizza sauce {one jar worked for both pizzas}
- Mozzarella cheese {enough to cover well}
- toppings - we chose sausage and pepperoni

Steps:
Preheat the over to 425. Roll dough onto a baking pan. Cover with the pizza sauce and then top with the cheese. Next add the precooked toppings. Bake for about 13 minutes and then you are all set! YUM!

Both kids were SO proud of their pizzas and how yummy they tasted! You will definitely want to add this to your weekly meal planning recipe book.
It was delicious! Know what's even better? It was a crockpot meal. I do love a good meal from the crockpot. I'm not always in love with the crockpot meals because you can taste that it was sitting all day, but this one was a score for the whole family!

Friday - Taco Chicken Bowls :) DELICIOUS!!! This recipe I found on Budget Bytes.

Saturday - WELL, I had a meal planned and I was just feeling blah about it so we went out to eat. Then we had ice cream afterwards :)

Monday - we had Roast/potatoes/carrots in the crockpot. This one is super simple, just add those food items, water {to cover the food} and a packet of lipton onion soup mix. Set it on low for the day and you will come home to a yummy aroma of delicious smelling food! Even better? The parents cooked so I didn't even have to worry about doing the crockpot!

Tuesday - life group at our house where we all bring themed food. This week was a potato bar. I made baked potatoes and then grilled cheese sandwiches for the kiddos. I literally just started eating baked potatoes about a year ago. Still not a fan of mashed potatoes, but I am loving the baked potatoes.

Wednesday - Kids choice day! This helps with giving me an idea about dinner AND its something they are guaranteed to love and eat! They chose spaghetti.

Thursday - Dinner did not go as planned. I had a chicken pot pie turnover meal planned, but it was taking too long and I had somewhere to be, so leftover spaghetti was for dinner!

Friday - Parmesan baked pork chops. We have had this one before and its always good. I also added butter beans and rice for the sides. Recipe below :) I originally found this one on Just A Pinch.

Taco Chicken Bowls

1&1/2 lbs chicken breasts
1 {16 oz jar} salsa
1 {15 oz} can black beans, drained {typing this I just realized I did not drain mine}
8 oz frozen corn
1 tbsp chili powder
1/2 tbsp cumin
1/2 tbsp minced garlic
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp salt
cracked pepper {to taste}
cooked rice
cheese
toppings

- Add everything {minus the rice, cheese, and toppings} to the slow cooker and then add about 1/4 cup of water. Mix it all together making sure the chicken is covered in the mixture.
- Turn slow cooker on for 8 hrs. This is key because I totally forgot to turn mine on after an hour - opps!
- After it is finished carefully remove the lid of the slow cooker. Stir with a fork to shred the chicken. Build the taco bowls by placing the rice on the bottom, then the taco chicken mix, shredded cheese and toppings

Parmesan Baked Pork Chops

4 boneless pork chops
1 tbsp olive oil
1 c parmesan cheese
1 c Italian bread crumbs {I didn't have any so I just used regular crumbs and Italian seasoning}
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder

In a bowl combine the last 4 ingredients. Rub the pork chops with olive oil and then dip each one on the dry mixture. Make sure to really coat the pork chop. Press the mixture over the pork chops to make sure they are well covered. Line a pan with tin foil and spray with cooking spay {I think I forgot to spray, but it turned out fine!}. Place the pork chops on the pan and bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

Tuesday we normally have our church small group over, but instead the ladies headed to church for a woman's event while the guys stayed home with the kids. John, however had to go to the school orientation meeting, so I left a crockpot meal. I think I printed this recipe in 2011, but it was the first time actually making it. You can check the site Raising Healthy Eaters for the recipe I printed. I'll list the recipe below as well.

Wednesday we had a favorite of John's - Turkey Meatloaf. This one is so simple! I literally prepped it in just a few minutes while the kids were getting in their baths. I have never been a meatloaf person, to be honest chunks of meat make me nauseous, but this one is just perfect! This recipe I pinned from Boys Ahoy and you can find the original link there. It was the night before our first day of school so dinner was early and then the kids went to bed! I was in bed early as well because I do not do mornings.

Thursday - first day of school! For breakfast Heidi chose cinnamon rolls. All day Harrison kept saying that cinnamon rolls are "super yummy"! That and that the "gookies" we were making were super yummy as well - and they were! I'm not giving you that recipe, but if you have a blue cookbook from RHUMC circa 1985 then you can find it on page 49. Just look for my mom's name :) You'll thank me later. Thursday is choir for me so I needed a simple meal. Actually, apparently all I need to to burn some nervous energy so I prepped this meal in the morning before lunch and then I could just pop it in the oven when it was time later! I'm a messy cook so that gave me plenty of time to clean up after myself. We had a Chicken and Wild Rice Casserole - found on Better Homes and Gardens, but I printed this in 2012 and cannot find the link to it. It was delicious! This is definitely one you can put in the freezer and bake later. On this one I do substitute the "cream of chicken soup" with a homemade mix.

Today is Friday and we will be having Taco Chicken Bowls. I found this one on Budget Bytes and I'm hopeful that it will be tasty!

Recipes:

Slow Cooker Chicken Parmesan

2-4 boneless chicken breast halves
1/2 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp Italian Seasoning
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp kosher salt
1 tbsp olive oil
1 beaten egg
sliced mozzarella cheese or 1 coup shredded
26 oz marinara sauce

Spread olive oil into the bottom on your slow cooker. Beat the egg in a bowl and in a separate dish mix the bread crumbs with the seasonings and parmesan cheese. Dip the chicken into the egg bowl covering with egg, then into the bread crumb bowl coating both sides. Place the coated chicken at the bottom of the crock pot. Repeat with all chicken. Layer mozzarella cheese on top and then pour marinara sauce on top. Cook on low for 6-7 hours or high for 3-4 hours. We served this with pasta :)

Turkey Meatloaf {I cut this in half for my foursome}

2 lbs ground turkey
1 egg
1 onion, finely chopped
1 cup milk
1 -1/4 cup dried bread crumbs
salt and pepper to taste

For the Sauce:
3 tbsp brown sugar
3 tbsp prepared mustard
1/3 cup ketchup

Preheat oven to 350. IN a large bowl combine turkey, egg, onion, milk, bread crumbs, and salt/pepper and mix. {the easiest way to mix is with your hands}. Place mixture into a lightly greased 9x13 baking dish and form into a loaf. Sprinkle with a dash or salt and pepper. In a separate bowl combine the sauce ingredients and mix. Pour over the loaf and spread evenly. Sprinkle a little bit of brown sugar over the top. Cover with foil and bake for about an hour.

Chicken and Wild Rice Casserole

6 oz package grain and wild rice mix
1/2 cup medium onion chopped
1/2 cup chopper celery
2 tbsp butter
can of condensed chicken with white and wild rice soup or cream of chicken soup
1/2 cup sour cream
1/3 cup dry white wine or chicken broth
2 tbsp fresh basil or 1/2 tsp dried basil crushed
2 cups cooked chicken or turkey
1/3 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese

Prepare rice mix according to package directions. Preheat oven to 350. In a large skillet cook onion and celery in melted butter over medium heat until tender. Stir in soup, sour cream, wine, and basil. Stir in cooked rice and chicken. Transfer mixture to an ungreased 2-quart baking dish. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake uncovered for 35 minutes or until heated through. Makes 4 servings.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14063286199824069226noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1728610029063868611.post-5819180230376165682016-08-09T09:45:00.001-04:002016-08-09T09:51:08.205-04:00Back to School MealsThis year I am determined not to have it all together, but at least have a little bit together. Normally I am running around like a frantic squirrel trying to get my stuff together at the last minute. It's really strange because I am such a planner, but it's that whole "it's never going to turn out the perfect way so let's just sit at the procrastination circus" type of mentality. But y'all, maybe it's finally being in the new house {ok, since December} and being able to get things into their place that is helping - maybe.

This summer has flown by, but we've made some amazing memories and really we didn't do much at all. It was relaxing! I am super nervous about Heidi going to "big girl" school and she is equally excited and nervous. With school starting in a couple of days this is normally the time when I think - AH we need a bookbag/clothes/etc!!! Not this year - nope! I have finished school shopping {for both kiddos}, ordered Harrison's Halloween costume, ordered Christmas PJs, and have half of my Christmas shopping finished. The only problem with the being ahead is that I will probably forget where I hide everything when the time comes to use it....

Maybe it is normal for people to be this ahead, but not for me. I definitely think it has a ton to do with our new accounting/budget system which I will post about at a later date - like when both kiddos are in school.

What I really wanted to post about was how our meal was last night. This is the first week of being completely back on our meal planning for the week. I was slack during the summer, but with a new schedule and harder days coming I knew that this year we had to be on top of things. Hopefully I can post about all of our meals and let you know how they fared in our household. I usually go straight to my Pinterest when getting ready to meal plan.

The other thing I have organized is my recipe binder. I had all of these recipes printed without organization. It was my on my list of things to do - in regards to my binder. SO finally I sat and put my binder together and now when I find a good recipe on Pinterest I go ahead and print it and then add it to the binder. This way I can make my notations on the print out of things I did differently in a recipe or if we liked it or not. PLUS, I found it a huge pain trying to use my phone on Pinterest while cooking at the same time. My phone would go into sleep mode and then I would have to find it all over again.

On to last nights meal.

By the way, I am not a great cook. I cook what is simple and easy.

I found a Crescent Burger recipe a few years ago and it has always been a hit - so we had those! Heidi scarfed hers down and Harrison ate his as well. The original link to the recipe is found on Budget Savy Diva. It tastes similar to a Krystal Burger, but better :) As a small side note, we use the same meat mixture without browning the meat to make hamburger patties for the grill. It is so yummy and changes the flavor of just a regular hamburger! I didn't take pictures {edit - I took a picture of a leftover} because I'm not that on top of things - maybe I will tonight for the slow cooker Chicken Parmesan, but don't get your hopes up!

Ingredients:
1/2 pound of ground beef
Worcestershire sauce
1 Egg
1/3 packet of Onion Soup mix {I accidentaly misread this and used a whole packet - it was fine}
1/2 tsp black pepper
2/3 cup of cheddar cheese
1 roll of crescents {the recipe makes enough to where I needed to use 2 rolls - so you get 16 pockets}

Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375
- Brown meat
- Mix 1/2 cup of cheese, onion soup mix, a few drops of Worcestershire sauce, pepper, browned meat
- Unroll the crescents and place a rounded tablespoon of the meat mixture towards the larger end of the crescent
- Roll until the meat is fully cover, like a little pocket
- Place pockets on parchment lined baking sheet
- Brush tops of dough with an egg wash {whisk egg and 1 tbsp of water}
- Sprinkle remaining cheese on top of egg wash
- Bake 10-15 minutes
It gets harder with each generation. Most things get easier, but I think parenting is the one thing that will never evolve. There was a post recently comparing the '70s and 80s verses kids of today. It spoke of how we were able to run around until the street lights came on, how we ran over to our friends' houses, explored in the woods, we were not on leashes - we were free. We were able to live without fear that there were bad people in the world. Oh, there were bad people, but they were not on our street. They were lurking somewhere in the shadows of places we did not venture. We also did not know about these things. Media was not on the corner of every single moment in all of our lives. We could be free to live without fear because we did not know to be fearful. There were not shootings all around us, there were not men trolling for young girls to kidnap them and sell them in their sex trafficking ring. No, the world was a much safer place.

Back in the 80s moms and dads were not watching us like hawks.

Today - today it is different. Everywhere you turn someone if being shot or abducted. Sex trafficking is one of the top growing industries in the US. Terrorists are marching in any place to make a statement in support of the sick beliefs they have. A lady was shot at 10:30 in the morning at the mall. No where is sacred anymore. Kids are taken from their yards, Target, or parking lots. Today all of our safe places seem unsafe and could be tainted at anytime.

Today we watch our children like hawks because one glance away could end in catastrophe. We don't let our kids have the freedom they once had because we can't.

BUT we can't let ourselves live in fear. We cannot simply miss out on the beauty this world has to offer because of fear. There are beautiful places and beautiful people that we will miss out on if we simply lock ourselves up.

Terrible things are going to happen. We can do our best to take precautions and be smart because there are things we can avoid by being alert. There are also times when we should be able to let our guard down a little. If you have read my blog for a long time you know that I lost a child. Thankfully I did not have a mob of angry people throwing stones and blaming my uterus or me for not keeping my baby safe. There are other things that have happened that could have ended worse than they actually did. I've closed my child's fingers in the door, pinched legs with car seats, watched them grab keys off a desk - run - and then poke their eye, one has had their head stuck in bars, one walked into a pool while 20 adults had their backs turned, and I could go on. The point is, any of these things could have ended with devastating results. I also consider myself a semi-helicopter parent. I watch and I prepare for the "what ifs" in life.

The point is, the things listed above, they could happen to anyone. When tragedies happen we need to be there to support each other, not cast blame, not to lash out on the grieving parents, to make them relive the grief over and over. People are always looking for ways to make themselves feel better or more superior. We make a mistake? Ok great, but look at what that person did - it was way worse. That's what we do to make our lives and ourselves feel better.

When tragedies strike we need to be that shoulder to cry on - not the ones beating a dead horse. The parents of Lane, the boy taken by the alligator in Disney, have suffered enough. They are suffering enough without your bullying and pointed fingers. Take yourself out of the equation. Stop thinking about what you would have done or not done because you were not there and you have no idea what you would have done. Just stop. What should you do? Give grace, give love, give support. CARE about others instead of taking a moment to make yourself feel better.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14063286199824069226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1728610029063868611.post-34078737573726275752016-06-01T22:10:00.000-04:002016-06-01T22:10:39.486-04:00Beach DayWe headed to the beach for a couple of hours the other day. Yay! There is something so relaxing and carefree about being on the beach. Maybe its because I have grown up on the coast, but there is a need for sand and saltwater sometimes - like its in my veins. I'm not really a fan of river water or murky water, but I will settle for the Atlantic even though I grew up going to the Gulf Coast.

Heidi is going to be the same way. She longs to be in the water and swims like a fish! Heidi will go to the pool or beach - I really think she loves the beach the most. Harrison on the other hand....he is a little more timid. This year I was completely shocked because he enjoyed running around on the sand and in the water. I am thankful Harrison enjoyed the beach because when babies are cranky it can make for a not so much fun time for Mama. Hopefully this is a sign of many fun beach days ahead this summer!
Down with technology and hello to family fun! Today we played a few yard games - of course we had to video because apparently the kids love the little videos of the kids playing with their toys and opening eggs or whatever they are doing so they want to video our stuff too. I would much rather it be us doing something fun then watching someone else play with their toys.

John is finishing up the play set for the kids and while he was building Heidi took the slide and pulled it over the trampoline. Such a smart and strong little cookie! It was a perfect idea and now I think we might need to buy a little slide just for the trampoline. They had such a good time on it!
One was ballet instruction only without a recital. Ballet is such a foundation for any sort of dance - perfect for sports as well. It is truly something you can carry with you forever. I do not know what the future holds with Heidi and dance or if she will decide to dance next year, but she is such a beautiful dancer that I hope she decides to stay with dance. Of course having grown up dancing I am a little biased! Heidi has such a pure and sweet heart and I can feel that on stage when she dances. I do love both dance studios we have chosen - they have such a talented group of ladies!

Friday we had a little observation for the ballet instruction only studio and Saturday Heidi had her recital. I was so proud of Heidi! So many changes to a few years ago when my friend Paula was shaking a box of nerds in the wings while Heidi danced in order to bribe her to stay on stage :) Sometimes she might not smile {she said she forgets sometimes} but she goes right on stage and is just such a shining ray of sunshine! It might have been the last time she dances on stage, but whatever she decides to pursue next I know she will be great!
I am so thankful that lazy days without schedule are upon us. This summer is going to be full of pool days, crafts, fun times outdoors, the beach, and whatever else we want to enjoy! Heidi finished Kindergarten last week and it was such a bittersweet moment. This school has loved on Heidi for the last 4 years and I know we will never find another like it. The kids in the class truly cared for each other, they prayed when one of their classmates was sick, and have grown up together. Next year they will be going their separate ways.

The kiddos had a class picnic indoors {because the weather has been rainy off and on during the week} and there were photo booth options set up for them to take pictures. At night we had the BIG graduation celebration for the Class of 2016. The graduates were so excited!! They were absolutely precious with their songs! The smiles were full of joy, pride, and a hint of nervousness as they crossed the stage to receive their diplomas. I didn't cry at all, which surprised me, but I might have eaten my feelings throughout the week with a box of fudge rounds. After the ceremony we headed out to eat dinner and ate with Heidi's BFF and their family. Harrison got a little pouty, but it was incredibly late for him and he gets a little moody when he needs to eat - don't we all??
The last day of school Heidi's class had a game day and all sorts of fun! Harrison's class had a fun pizza and party celebration with a slide show of pictures showing what they did throughout the year. It was amazing to see the growth of the kids! Harrison has grown leaps and bounds this year! He went from only saying a couple of words to now chatting our ears off with words we had no idea he even knew! Seriously zero to complete sentences. After school we headed to a pool party for Heidi's class. Such a fun time and thankful the weather held out for the kids to have one last time to hang out.

Here is a little look at the first and last days of school - such a change in these little guys! I love looking back on the pictures to see how much they have changed over the years. Time really does go so quickly. I cannot believe that 7 years ago I did not think I would ever even be able to have children after Hudson died and now they are almost 6 and 3. Everyday I am so thankful to God for these sweet blessings He has allowed me to watch over. I know that they are His, but I will be eternally thankful for my entire life that He chose me to be their Mama.
When I asked Heidi what she would like for her birthday she stated she would like a Barbie Dream House. After a quick search on Amazon John and I decided that would be a present for a later time. Between the price and the fact that we have NO room in the house we opted to search for something else. When roaming the aisles we happened upon this annoying kiosk that John thought he should keep pressing the buttons to make it sing. On it was this Kidizoom Action Cam. Think "Go-Pro" for kids!

Heidi opened it and of course was like, what in the world is this, but we told her it was her own camera for pictures and videos! The girl has filled my phone memory with pictures and videos. I LOVE them, but sometimes I would like to take a picture without the "storage full" message popping up.

An awesome feature about this camera is that it can go underwater! YES! There is this little case you put it in a you are ready to go! This past week my niece was in town and I saw her making a few videos - can't wait to upload those little gems! Oh yeah, you can upload all the pictures to your computer as well!
The intention was to just go for the day, but we ended up going for two because Heidi was insistent upon swimming in the random little swimming pool at the house. Harrison is still not a fan of the sand on the beach and ended up sitting in my lab under the tent the entire time. Eventually Harrison fell asleep :) I am thankful we have a few options for going to the beach, but as much as I LOVE everything about the beach I prefer going to the pool where there is less sand. Everything else - the sounds, smells, food, calmness - I am beach all the way!
On the way out Heidi and I stopped by one of our favorite places to eat - The Crab Trap. John was pretty mad {not really} but we couldn't resist! My girl loves her shrimp so I couldn't deny her!
This morning there was a turtle stuck in our fence and we took him out so he could continue on his adventure. There are turtles all of the time hanging out in our yard. Heidi says it is because we are so nice and they feel safe. WELL, tonight when we got home John spotted another turtle {this one was smaller} and she was laying eggs!! EEK!! We didn't take pictures because we did not want to disturb her, but I am totally excited! Tomorrow's project is to get chicken wire to protect the next from the other animals we have around here. This will be so exciting for the kids to watch!
One morning this week Heidi decided to give herself a ton of accessories. Obviously we had to take a picture! Harrison was not having it. Each time I tried to take the picture he would run in front of the camera because he wanted HIS picture taken. This little guy is such a ham! He even picks up the camera and smiles so that I will take his picture.
Awesome find of the week - a Barbie Dream House on an online yard sale site for $40! And it has barely been played with! Christmas for Heidi :) Side perk, it also included all of the furniture with it - yay!! We have plenty of Barbies, so now she will be able to play all day! She asked for one for her birthday, but I just couldn't justify the cost - that and we certainly do not have the room right now!

The older we get the more important it is to take care of yourself. John and I are determined to set a healthy example for our children. By us working out they will be more likely to incorporate fitness into their daily routine. Back in November I decided enough was enough. Tired of feeling depressed about the "baby/toddler weight" I started going to a training center with my friend. {ahem - you need to join back with us!!!} John decided that since I was going that he would go as well. In December John ended up with rhabdomyolysis, which can basically KILL you, and was in the hospital for 4 days so we took a month break.

If you start back to working out and then suffer extreme soreness {like it hurts to touch your other arm} for days and your urine starts turning brown - go straight to the ER.

We started back in January and then mid-February I did some major damage to my sciatic nerve {think hot yoga for over an hour and me thinking I am still flexible enough to touch my foot to the
back of my head} and literally was couch bound for 2 weeks. I couldn't walk. It was the worst pain I had ever been in and I seriously thought I was going to never walk again. I begged for a catheter because the mere thought of getting up to go to the bathroom was enough to make me hold it for days - I didn't of course, but there were lots of tears.

I had to take about 2 months off because of my back {and had to take off this tennis season} while John stayed the course and lost about 30 pounds. In late April I started back and so far so good!

SO - my Monday Must-Have is some sort of gym or training center. Ours in small is has 1-3 people in a session. I love the feel of the smaller gym because I am less self-conscious of people watching my out of shape self. This is something John and I needed. We used to be in amazing shape, but now, well not so much. Neither of us have the discipline to push ourselves at a gym without a trainer. so instead of paying for a gym membership that will probably not get used we go to a center where we are held accountable. If we were to go to a gym we would probably get a trainer and that would probably cost $35-$65 a session. These sessions cost around $20 a session so it works out much better!

Our gym is Studio Fit and we HIGHLY recommend it. Sean and Brandon {the trainers} are awesome to work with and so much fun. To further explain the awesomeness I will let you see a picture of me with a little sweat - I never sweat - like ever. Let me know if you have an awesome gym or if you want to try ours!

SUCH a FUN time! As usual we had a pool party and had everyone over to my parents' house for the fun and festivities. The nice thing about summer birthdays and your family having a pool is it makes it super convenient for a party! Heidi enjoyed having her friends and family over to celebrate the BIG FIVE and couldn't wait for her guests to arrive.

I am not one to do all sorts of crafts and things to get ready for the party - pool, food, cake, and you are set for a party! At the last minute I ended up printing a couple of things off, but as much as I WANT to have the pinterest party birthday, I love the low key birthdays like we all grew up having. I love the pinterest looking parties and if I was not such a procrastinating perfectionist {look it up! basically a perfectionist gets paralyzed and procrastinates because the work will not live up to how you want it to be...its a tough world}I would definitely do many more "fancy" things. I printed off "Frozen" themed items and made a birthday banner, some food labels, and thank you notes. Frozen - so original, I know! You can check out the FREE printables here!

This is the night before her birthday and her last night being 4 :( You have no idea what Heidi means to me. She was my little rainbow after the storm and a sign of God's promise that HE would always be here. She is so full of life and fun. She calls me mama about 5 million times a day and even though sometimes I would like to use the bathroom by myself, have unbroken favorite items, and maybe have 3 minutes of silence - I would not trade any of that for the world. After Hudson I did not know if I would want to face the same heartbreak of having another baby again, but God had other plans when I found out we were expecting Heidi.

Decorating her birthday cake. I am, and will never be, a "pretty baker". You know, the cakes or cookies that look like they just came out of a magazine? Nope, my cake if lopsided and it was crumbling a bit into the icing. I thought about telling everyone it was chocolate chip icing, but I refrained - ha! It still tasted good though! Not pictured, but before finishing the cake Heidi invited a couple of friends over to swim!
We ended the day with celebrating a Fish Tales {Heidi's choice} and had a very nice dinner outside where the bugs were not around and it was not too hot. Its a great local seafood restaurant in town! All in all Heidi said she had a wonderful birthday!
They remind me of a pair I purchased 5 years ago while I needed a bit of retail therapy while I was waiting on Heidi's arrival. I couldn't buy clothes at the time, so jewelry it was! I wear them at least 1-2 times a week and I am happy to have another pair that is similar, yet different to change it up a bit!

Back in the day I used to accessorize constantly, but that was before a little angel started breaking all of my necklaces. Slowly I can add more accessories to my wardrobe for the 5 times a year I am out of non-sweaty gym clothes. The other day I wore these earrings for the first time and I have worn them everyday for at least a little bit since! If you want a pair like these you will definitely have to act fast because they are on a tester for a direct sales company ;) Here is a link if you would like a pair!
Now, I am not horrible, but there are definitely improvements that could be made. We planned to take a meal to a family that we had not met yet, but they will soon be our neighbors. One day, when we were going to see our house and how it was coming along our future neighbor popped out to say hello and we are super excited that it is a family and the couple is around our age! Of course, because I have to know everything about every situation, I found our neighbors on facebook {back in March} and then randomly a mutual friend posted a meal train site on FB because of something they are going through right now.

Check out the recipe here - it is one I have cooked before. I also made broccoli, brownies {with chef Heidi of course}, and rolls.

I am so happy that I was able to take this meal and meet the other half of our new neighbors. Going into someones home that I have never met is definitely out of my comfort zone, but I am so thankful I stepped out and met our neighbor this way. I was over there for an hour, but I am sure I could have stayed longer! There will be many nights of sweet tea and conversation in our near future!

During the day today the kids and I went swimming and then had lunch outside. Luckily we have been going early enough in the mornings to swim for a few hours before the rain. Today's fun pool trick involved me throwing Harrison in the air and him going underwater and popping back up. He loved it! Me, on the other hand, I worked out my triceps yesterday and biceps this morning so my arms are pretty much like mush right now. At first the day seemed to be starting a little rough with pool time. Harrison did not want to take off his Mickey shirt so he would not even get his bathing suit on. I was finally able to get him to get his bathing suit on and he kept his Mickey shirt. After pool time I wanted to change him and the only way he would change was if it was into another Mickey shirt. Looks like we're going to have to add a few more shirts to his wardrobe...
I read articles like this all of the time because I am constantly trying to find my way in cleaning out what we have accumulated during this lifetime. Not everything works for everyone, but finding a system that works for you and your life is the best thing to do. I am constantly pinning to find a way to declutter or organize. Most of you probably said, "you just throw it away", but that does not seem to work in my situation.

During this time of saving we have not bought many material items so that has been easy to not add to our stuff and things are getting better with getting rid of items. So, all in all I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I discovered this new way that works for me with my drawers. Currently we are still using a temporary chest of drawers, but this will definitely carry on to when we move and have our old dresser back.
Basically you fold all of your clothes upright so that you can see everything in there and you will not have to dig around for what you are looking for. This has been so helpful and I started this with Heidi's clothes too. Side-note, I showed John my new drawer system and he opened his drawer to see if I did it for him - oops! Maybe next laundry day ;)

At the last moment she wanted to be a doctor, but then changed back to a teacher. She is so sticking adorable and has been talking about being a teacher for a couple of months now. Personally I think she would make a fantastic teacher because she is smart and loves to show people how to do things. You know, a 4 year old knows SO much more than we do, right? Well, a teacher costume was simple. We just grabbed some clothes because that is what teachers wear and we made sure to add a little blazer to make her look a little more "professional". I punched the lenses out of a pair of glasses and then pulled her hair back. Next we added an apple just for fun! And voila! You have the most adorable little teacher ever! No money spent and a happy little one to be able to dress up for her career!
We were outside this morning for hours and it was so nice because the clouds were out just enough to shade the sun. I bought a fun little ball sprinkler thing the other day and we finally used it. The kids loved chasing the balls around and playing in the water that sprayed out. You can get one on Amazon! Mine was on sale when I got it ;)
Harrison is like a little fish in the water. He will swim all around and then just stick his legs out {with pointed toes} out stiff as he can and just float. Heidi is our underwater queen. She loves to dive around and sit at the bottom. We are still working on her actually swimming and while we are in our own pool she can go without the puddle jumpers {if you don't have a set you need them with kids} but if we are in a large crowd then she will have to wear them because too many kids in one place {in the pool} will make my head spin in all directions.When we were at the pool at Disney there was a little boy, maybe in between Harrison and Heidi that at one point had swimmers on and then later he didn't. but he was swimming with an older brother or cousin. The family was way on the other side of the pool and the older one got tired of watching the boy. He told the adults he was tired of watching him but no one seemed to listen or care. Eventually I saw the little boy and kept a watchful eye on him, but it made me so sad. I was ready to jump in and save this boy even though his family way on the other side wasn't even paying a bit of attention. Anyway, so Heidi wears her puddle jumpers when in crowds.

The kids looked cute today and I took a ton of pictures, but we will never get to see them because I did not have the memory card in the camera and they do not save to the camera. I wish it had a little flashing light like my DSLR that would let me know there was not a memory card. So because of that you get stock pictures of random people playing :)

What I didn't post about was a stop we made on our way home. We can get to the beach a couple of different ways. I took a route home that led us near to where Hudson is buried. Being that close I decided to stop by for a short visit. I have mentioned before that I am not a "cemetery person" and I rarely go visit a grave. To be honest, I think it has been 5 years since our last visit. The place is beautiful and overlooks the water - if you wanted to pick out a burial place this is definitely a nice one, but still, we rarely go. On this day I felt like I should at least stop by.

The past few months have been a little sad for me and I cannot quite put my finger on why. Maybe that is why I have turned back to blogging to get my feelings back to "pen and paper". There is so much involved when it comes to grief. Sometimes you wonder if its a case of the green eyed monster making its way into your world or if its social media that throws in your face what you have lost. Small unintentional jabs come from all directions. Things like "life is so hard when you have 3" or "they are only 15 months apart so that is tough", I still remember things said to me in the early times and those replay in my head constantly. My "favorite" is right after we announced we were expecting Heidi and someone said, "see, I knew it would happen, all it took was for you to get in your new house". Hmm...

Lately though I feel like I am looking at a stranger in the mirror. I see this person who looks like me, but has been aged by grief. Looking at so many other people who have grief from losing a child I see it in them too - grief ages a person. I see the extra emotional eating weight, the worry lines, the disappointing lines, so many things that do come with age, but I see them more at the sad times. Some days it is like I have been swallowed by the ocean and I am rolling in a swirling spiral just barely able to keep my head above water. Sometimes I feel like it would be so nice just to let it swallow me up and take a break. Grief is can be exhausting and keeping your head above the water is not easy on some days.

Our church gave a sermon on fear and worry and how in the Bible we are told many times not to fear or worry. Trust me, I already have all of the versus on speed dial. You cannot be an anxiety filled person like I am without having those versus memorized, I always feel much better after reciting the versus several times, but then you find the devil {aka social media} and read about a child that recently passed away in his sleep. At that current moment your youngest is taking his nap. Instantly you snap up, run into the bedroom, and check for breathing. He's breathing and you just start to sob praying to God that His will be done, but PLEASE let His will be to keep your family alive and together. Your sobbing starts even more as you pray, so much that you run into the bathroom so that your other child does not see you crying. That's the life of someone suffering from grief. I think I am mixed with grief and fear that I will have to grieve again. Losing a child in my womb and seeing his lifeless body is the absolute worst moment I have experienced in m life. Losing one of my children now? I don't even want to go there with you...

I'm 6 and a 1/2 years into this journey and I'm still battling everyday. I know I will never be the same person I once was and that too is something to grieve. Sometimes I just want a day where there is not a single sad moment in my day. Just one. The only light that gets me through the day is that I will be reunited with my son again and what a glorious day that will be - no more suffering, no more pain. Without having Jesus, the light in my life, I do not even want to imagine how dark my life would be and where I would be now in this journey. Still thanking God everyday for His blessings and always praying for His will to be done.
No more hand, foot, mouth, chipped tooth incidents, or other various medical issues going on so it worked out. We chose Tybee {other choices being SSI or Jekyll} simply because it was just a teeny bit closer than the others and we are in VBS this week at night. The kids loved the beach, and by that I mean Heidi loved the beach. Harrison just liked to sit in my lap and let the waves knock us over. He did not want anything to do with touch the sand. Heidi, on the other hand, enjoyed the sand a little too much. My ear is proof because a day later I still have sand on the inside of my ear. I can hear it every time I swallow. Funny how years ago my priority at the beach was laying on my chair working on my tan and now its making sure the kids are enjoying their time and we are all coated in enough sunscreen.The pictures below are the only times Harrison touch the sand,
Earlier I mentioned VBS - what an ordeal that started off to be! We went to register and then found out that the earliest age accepted was if you had just finished kindergarten - oops! Well, little Miss Heidi pitched a fit and thankfully the sweet women at the church {this is not the church we attend, but a local church in our town where we have many friends} must have taken pity on me or something, but they allowed Heidi to join in the fun. She is having a blast! Tonight the kids could dress up like a character and she randomly asked to dress like Snow White. Even more random? We were able to find my Snow White costume from when I was in 1st grade....apparently I did not like wearing the black wig because it covered my blonde hair - notice the slight forced smile?
We have been before, but it seems like the magic is always there and amazing. I'm not even sure where it all came from {maybe our first family trip from September}, but suddenly I am obsessed with Disney. Not like the clothing or the paraphernalia. but going and experiencing the magic. The kids love going and I love seeing them enjoy each moment. There are still so many things we have not been able to experience - the night shows, entire parades, etc, but in due time we will! Some people can go, go, go and power through all day, but we certainly cannot and until we get some ear pieces for Harrison we will not be experiencing a night time show. Working on that for next trip!
We had a birthday party on Saturday morning so before heading to Orlando we have a fun time celebrating Heidi's cousins' joint birthday celebration. It stormed, but the kids will all about getting into the pool anyway. Then they played carnival games, ate, and had cupcakes! Heidi loves a good birthday party and we have several coming up this month!
Right after the party we headed to Disney and our hotel. The kids were loaded with the iPads, coloring books/crayons, toys, and drinks - so we were ready to roll! It isn't a bad drive so we made it pretty quick! We ended up staying at the All-Star Music resort and it was easy to find. I love to stay on the Disney property because it is so convenient for your trip. I also compared the rates to this resort with hotels around the area and it was the same price, if not cheaper.

After we arrived and checked in the hotel {and were given two balloons}we parked our car and unloaded everything. This took a couple of trips because it was just me and the kids. The past two times there was always someone with a luggage cart to help with our bags and I sort of counted on that again, but there was not this time. No worries though, we managed and got unloaded :) Our next stop was to find something to eat. We shared a meal of chicken, green beans, and mac-n-cheese that was at the resort restaurant. NEXT, we went swimming! We saw two pools to choose from on our path and Heidi chose the one with the three amigos. The kids love the water and were excited to get into the pool!

We made it a sort of late night and then headed back to our room to go to sleep! The next morning we woke up bright and early and enjoyed breakfast in our room. I love going to Disney and you can really make it a little less expensive if you plan to take some of your own food. A meal plan for Heidi and myself would have added $200 to our total {Harrison is not eligible because he is free to get in the parks}, but by taking breakfast, lunch, and snacks you can save a ton! The only meals I purchased were dinners and we usually only purchased one meal and we could all share it. We kept our water bottles filled all day and even including a souvenir for each child I spent less than $100. That was dinners, ice cream, popcorn, and a couple of cokes. I highly suggest a meal plan if you intend on reserving character dinings and you intend on being there for a longer length of time, but for the weekend we didn't need one.

Our first park for the trip was Magic Kingdom! Heidi was super excited to ride Peter Pan and see Anna and Elsa. We made those stops as well as a few other favorites that day! Around 3 we headed back to the hotel to take a break and maybe go back out to the parks that day. It was a Sunday so things were not crowded at all so our wait time was usually less that 20 minutes per activity.

The next day was a big day for us. I don't even know how we were out so late. We slept in a little and then headed to Animal Kingdom around 10AM. We walked around, did a few rides and then we headed to Hollywood Studios. Next, we went to Blizzard Beach where is ended up closing a little early because of a storm coming. SO, after that we headed to Magic Kingdom for dinner. I thought we would leave right after dinner, but we ended up staying and riding a couple of rides. It rained on us, but it was not too terrible. We waited a LONG time for the Peter Pan ride and I'm not really sure what was going on because we were literally standing in the same spot for 30 minutes. The kids were doing so well though and Harrison ended up falling asleep in my arms and staying asleep throughout the ride. We headed straight to the stroller and the fireworks show was just about to start and that is when Harrison lost it. Don't worry, we will have ear muffs for the next trip. They are already on order. Once we made it to the bus it was fine, but I REALLY wanted to watch the show. One day I will get to see one :) We made it home and the kids FaceTimed their daddy at 11PM. I have no idea how they were still awake. Needless to say we slept in the next morning!

Our last day I packed and loaded up the car and then we headed back to Magic Kingdom, We walked around and did out thing and then we headed him! Today was a big shocker though. Harrison actually walked near a character!!! YES! We are making progress! We had such a fun time and I love making memories with these two little blessings! Looking forward to our next trip and hoping John can make it with us!
Summer started last week and we have been enjoying every minute of it! Minus a little virus setback and a fall that ended with a little chipped tooth {having it check tomorrow} for Harrison. Heidi's last day of school was last Tuesday and then we had a busy Wednesday as well. Thursday we took Miss Heidi to have her first real haircut! Yay! We have been talking about it for months! It has been way overdue, but we are in love with her new cut! Its a little sad, but she is looking so much more like a big girl. I do love how she loves her new style of hair and how easy it is for brushing, bathing, and in the pool.

Harrison occupied his time very well while sissy had her haircut. This little boy needs his hair trimmed, but I am too scared to cute his little curls! We will hold off on his cut until after we have his 2 year pictures taken. Then MAYBE we will get his hair trimmed. I think the curls will come back though. It is amazing how his curls and personality go hand in hand.
One day we made a few water balloons and attacked Daddy when he came home from work. I sent him a warning text to take off his shoes before getting out of the car. These little munchkins were so excited to surprise their Daddy!
There is always time for a tea party in our house. Heidi loves to set them up and Harrison loves to do anything that his sister wants to do - except wear her old costumes and dresses.
Both kids are swimming like fishes! Harrison does NOT want you to hold him in the water. Heidi jumps up and down like a fish and both kids absolutely love being in the water. Everyday I am asked if we are getting in the pool. We love to wait for Daddy to come home and swim - that way we miss a lot of those key sun burning hours in the day!
Today we went bowling! So excited about the free summer bowling! Definitely gives us another fun thing to do without having to spend any money! Heidi did not want to use the little ramp to push the ball down, but Harrison love it! The cutest thing was he would cheer for himself every time he hit a pin!
I am looking forward to the rest of the summer and all of the fun we are going to have! The next few weekends our plates are full of birthday parties! We will have lots of swimming, bowling, $1 movies. and many other random adventures. Stay tuned!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14063286199824069226noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1728610029063868611.post-19200859485146580902015-05-21T21:23:00.001-04:002015-05-21T21:24:11.858-04:00Take on Mother's DayMother's Day was a few weeks ago and I wanted to post my "take" on the day as well as address all of the recent posts filtered around on social media. I get it, I really do. Mother's Day can be hard. My first two Mother's Days I was a childless mom and the sting of the holiday could be unbearable at times. Even after having living children I really did not even feel like celebrating the holiday. I didn't want to celebrate if my first child was not living.

Flash forward to this year. My feelings are still the same, I'm not big on the holiday, BUT and a very large BUT, we cannot make others feel guilty about celebrating a holiday just because it makes us sad. I know - that is a tough and harsh pill to swallow, but its true. There is always going to be a time or place when someone is sad - Christmas, Thanksgiving, Wednesday, a local restaurant, you name it. People are always missing loved ones, craving for something else, or discontent with something.

I know what it feels like to be at church on Mother's Day when moms are standing and you can't. The one thing in my life that I was certain about was that I wanted to be a mom. I also remember the feeling of finally being able to stand. Finally getting that moment I had been craving. It was actually a little embarrassing standing, but that's just me. I like to blend in with the masses rather than stand out. Regardless of how that moment felt to me there are so many people that are just bubbling to get a chance to have that moment.

With that being said, I wish that people could allow for others to be able to celebrate something in their life without being made to feel guilty for celebrating. If we're going to start picking on Mother's Day then here is a list of things that I would ask people not to celebrate or post pictures of because it makes me sad:

-families with three children

-your six year old children "graduating Kindergarten {seriously, when did graduating Pre-K and K involve miniature cap and gowns??}

-next year's back to school pictures when your kids start 1st grade

-6 year olds in general

I could go on and on. The point we have to be able to celebrate with our friends and families. We cannot let our grief or sadness overtake us and cause us to want to change everyone else's moment just because it is something we cannot have at that time. I am sure there was probably a more delicate way to word all of that. but today is just a day to be blunt.
